A Collective Share... Part 1

I asked some blogger friends to answer some questions for me while I'm away snuggling Little Lucia. What they share is beautiful.

What has given you the most joy as a mother?

When my daughter first started reading, I felt this immense joy for her. We starting reading to Ella in infancy and, as she grew, her love of reading grew. We still enjoy reading together, but you can often find her lying on her belly, engrossed in a story by herself. I knew that reading would open up her world in a whole new way and it's so much fun to witness that change. She talks about the different things she reads, creates her own stories, and loves a trip to the library. These moments brings me the most joy in motherhood - watching my kids grow, learn new things, and expand their world. I love knowing that each one of them will have them in different ways over the years, and I'll get to be a part of that.

Where did you go for information in regards to newborns or caring for an infant?

When it came to seeking information about caring for a newborn or infant the first time around, I often turned to trusted friends. I watched them care for their little ones and gleaned parenting tips from them. If jaundice or a fever had me panicked, I could turn to a friend whose husband was a medical student and, later, a wonderful friend who worked as a nurse. When I felt discouraged with breastfeeding, a sweet friend talked me through it and gave me encouragement. My sister talked me through the myriad of car seat options and shared her research with me. When I had a question that stretched their expertise or I simply wanted more info, I would often Google for trusted sites and interesting blogs - hence the blog name "The Inquisitive Mom."

What is your ONE must-have baby item?

With baby number three, I truly recognized that a baby carrier (or two or three different styles) is an absolute lifesaver. A baby carrier changed everything for my growing family - from school pick ups, to trips to the grocery store, to simply enjoying the park together. If at all possible, I recommend that parents visit a local store and try on different styles of carriers to see how they work with their body type. I went into a store certain about one brand and discovered another that fit much more comfortably.

What has given you the most joy as a mother?

Unexpectedly it's been breastfeeding. I did not expect to fall in love with breastfeeding like I have since I decided to breastfeeding kind of on a whim, but I really enjoy it. There is nothing like the way my baby girl (nicknamed Sunshine) looks up at me while she's eating. She looks at me with such love in her eyes. Sometimes she plays with my hands while she eats or gently rubs my arm. I know the bond we've formed will last forever.

Where did you go for information in regards to newborns or caring for an infant?

The biggest sources I used for information on how to care for my newborn were handouts from the hospital, other Moms, and of course my family. As far as breastfeeding goes I talked with Lactation Consultants, and looked at websites like KellyMom.com.

What is your ONE must-have baby item?

WubbaNub - Sunshine LOVES her WubbaNub. I had to buy two so I have a back-up.

What has given you the most joy as a mother?

I am a SAHM and I love being able to do this for our family. It was the best decision for us and I love to be able to volunteer in the classroom and be able to take my children on field trips to teach them and watch them learn.

Where did you go for information in regards to newborns or caring for an infant?

I read a lot of books during my pregnancy with my first born, but then after she was born I was seek out support from other moms and teaching staff from ECFE (Early Childhood Family Education, which is a State of MN educational program within the public school system for ages Birth-6.) With my second child, I still read but my time tended to be limited to reading magazine articles and seeking out support from friends online, in playgroups and from ECFE.

What is your ONE must-have baby item?

My must have item was a boppy. I breastfed my children for the first year of their lives and I brought my boppy with me wherever I brought my child that I may be there for an extended period and would end up breastfeeding. I brought it to family gatherings, trips and even to the movies.
