{review of} Jelly Strands

Jelly Strands are fashionable, fun necklaces and bracelets designed with both mom and baby in mind. They come in a variety of shapes, designs, and colors, staying right on trend with a little pop of color in everyday jewelry.

The company is created and owned by Jennifer and Lynn, a mother and daughter duo themselves. Here is a little bit about them:

Jelly Strands began in 2012 shortly after the birth of my youngest daughter. I found myself no longer able to wear my favorite accessories because she loved to drool, pull and chew on everything in sight. Discouraged by the high prices of teething jewelry available in stores, I teamed up with my mother to create a line of accessories that are not only safe but also stylish and affordable. With a soft jelly-like texture that both moms and babies will love, the Jelly Strands collection offers a full line of chic and practical accessories in a wide range of colors and styles perfect for any occasion. And while Jelly Strands were originally created with moms in mind, they are by no means just for moms and babies. Our jewelry is fashionably designed for all women to enjoy. You can always be confident that our products are 100% safe, non-toxic, and chemical free.

{the verdict} Jelly Strands Kate Necklace in Quartz

The Quartz is one of the more neutral colors in their lines; this makes it easy to accessorize an everyday outfit. Like the creators, I too am constantly bummed when I have to forgo a favorite item of jewelry because of fear that my baby will pull it off or stick an unsafe material in her mouth. The idea of a necklace that works in those conditions, in fact is designed for those conditions is beyond perfect! I tend to be a practical buyer, and this definitely is a practical, useful purchase item.

I wore my necklace on many occasions; to church with a dress, to a Labor Day barbecue with shorts and a tank-top, and to the grocery store in my yoga pants too. Even when I wasn’t holding my baby, I knew the purpose wasn’t gone, because it also served as a cute accessory.

My {almost} 9-month-old is at the stage that everything goes in her mouth, so this was a perfect time to introduce an item like this (although hindsight, I’m sure she would have taken to it around 5-6 months just as well.) The necklace is a bit heavy and she is pretty petite, so she did struggle to maintain it in her mouth. I could see her interest in it, especially when I was wearing it, but if I sat her down and laid it next to her (in my supervision) she didn’t seem gravitated towards it and onto the next toy/item to place in her mouth she went.

However, while with a couple of friends, a 5 month old son and a 9 month old daughter, they both loved to play with it! They wouldn’t let go of it, so I’m chalking that one up to my daughter just learning to crawl and having new interests at the moment.

When it came to wearing it while nursing, it was fun to see my little babe pulling and playing with something while she was eating away. At first, she was more interested in the necklace than nursing, but once she got used to it, she got right back down to business as usual.

{to consider}

  • Heavy for a smaller baby to pick up and maneuver
  • In my experience, the distraction/interest from baby didn’t last all that long
  • Firm beads, I thought they would be more squishy and malleable in baby’s mouth

{overall}

I love the concept of this item, but was sad that my baby wasn’t entertained as long as I hoped by it. After seeing my friend’s baby go-to-town with it, I became a little more convinced that it was more my baby and less the product. I’m sure you will still see me around town sporting my Jelly Strands Kate Necklace and probably even the Hamptom Necklace in Tulip and the Bleckley Necklace in Clover.
